According to Vincent Brome in his popular biography of Priestley, the author described it as 'a little coloured trial balloon', while The Spectator magazine said it was no more credible than a fairy tale. The novel opens quite realistically under the great grey vault of St Pancras Station and quickly takes flight with sinister inspectors, melodramatic barons, intrigue by moonlight, 'a whole rich pudding of the commonplace and the preposterous.' A secret society, the Companions of the Rose, mistake Adam Stewart for the true heir to the English throne, and the chase that follows brings the highly-coloured cast into hilarious action. As his first novel, it offers insights into much of what Priestley would write in later years. Benighted torrential downpour forces Philip and Margaret Waverton and their friend Roger Penderel to seek shelter in an ancient, crumbling mansion inhabited by the strange and sinister Femm family. Determined to make the best of the circumstances, the benighted travellers drink and talk to pass the time while the storm rages outside. But as the night progresses and tensions rise, dangerous and unexpected secrets emerge. On the house’s top floor are two locked doors: behind one of them is the mysterious, unseen Sir Roderick Femm, while the other conceals something terrifying and deadly ...
