His contributions to the trove of words culture cannot be overstated. Nizami entered history primarily as he creator of the epic-dramatic genre, a new literary trend in Oriental poetry. His seminal work "Panj Ganj" (Persian: Five Jewels) subsequently merged under the single title "Khamsa" ("Quinary"), marked a turning point in cultural history of the Orient with defining impact on literary processes and subsequent development in many countries. Yet Nizami was not only a great poet. He was o profound and original thinker, whose ideas were leaps and bounds beyond age, foreseeing concepts that were to emerge much later during Europe's Revaissance, namely humanism, exalted love, self-sacrifice, and the moral imperative to struggle for justice. [...] The aphorisms by Nizami brought to the reader's attention in this book constitute but a small part of tremendous wealth expressed in numerous sayings, statements and thoughts, presented in aphoristic form, which are sprinkled throughout the poet's works. In selecting the aphorisms for the present book, our attention was to pick up those which, taken separately, hint at the underlying thrust and scope of Nizami's ideas, as well as the main problems that are of interest to him and reflected in his writings.
